About the Maltby Intermediate Bands

The band program at Maltby is the beginning point of the Brighton Band Program.  As the largest student group at Maltby the band program usually consists of almost 400 students.  Band begins in 5th grade where the instruction is done in conjunction with a staff of instrument specialists.  The students work on material in their method book, but also work on sheet music, and do supplemental materials as assigned by either the director or instrument specialists.

6th Grade Band is technically a continuation of 5th grade band but by no means is it the same.  Students work in full band more than in 5th grade and of course as a result spend less time out with the instrument specialists.  The class is less method book driven and more learning through the sheet music.  Their concerts are exclusively sheet music.  The 6th grade band also works on solos and duets as a means to enhance their knowledge and apply their knowledge in a different way.

Each grade level  perform 3 concerts a year, in 5th grade in  January, March and May, and 6th Grade December, March and May.  For concerts the are split into two groups the Orange Group consists of the students in the who have band in hours 1,2,3 which are all the classes that have band in the before lunch.  The Black Group consists of the kids have band in the afternoon, after lunch.  The good news is that the music for both concerts is the same so students with schedule conflicts can switch concerts easily simply by letting me know ahead of time.  If possible please notify me at least two weeks prior to the performance.  Concert dates are listed elsewhere on this site for your convenience.
